I've begun to watch America' Next Top Model on Saturdays to view an entre season in one day. As a profesional counselor and assessor, I was amazed at all of the dysfunctional behaviors that occur in the house by the women and those who are the panel. True this is a dream come true for some of these girls but at what expense. In all group settings, there is a group interaction and a response. The dynamics in the top model house scream, HELP US! While all are over the age of (18), their mind set is of an adolescent nature with the behavior to match. This past Saturday I watched the bully of the house gain the title of America's Next Top Model. So America's Next Top Model is also a bully in disguise and how far will it take her until her mask slips? Life is multi-dimensional and ignoring behaviors for the purpose of TV ratings is appaling. The women voted off the show leave with visible scars and emotions that are (from the viewers eye) unaddressed. A healthy successful show would have a counselor onsite to address the house issues and behaviors of the women in the house. This approach would serve a purpose as those voted off would not have diminished self-esteem issues and the winner would be more than a pretty face who can model but a woman with maturity who knows who she is outside of being America's Next Top Model. Constructive criticism is still criticism no matter how pretty the package it's delivered in. Maybe the producers of the show are not interested in the wholistic approach but I'd be interetsed in hearing how the former models to be are now and what they thought of their experience on the show.
