Full Version: It's not about the numbers

I am so disappointed that this show uses pounds lost to determine part of the score. Every body has a different factors that contribute to "weight loss" and not every body is capable of losing at the same rates. I was looking forward to a show that would introduce fitness & health in a fun way and it is maddening to repeatedly see the judges infer that some contestants are slackers because the pounds aren't falling off. What about the increase in muscle mass (which weighs more than fat)? Most doctors would be very proud of their patients losing a healthy pound a week while increasing their fitness level.

I would like to see the scores based on performance, stamina, muscle tone & improvement. Surely there is a better, less biased way to determine progress than pounds on a scale? What about cardiac stress tests, blood glucose measurement, even BMI would be more accurate.

There could still be weekly weigh-in updates for those who are in love with the numbers, but for scoring DYAO should back away from the scale.

I completely agree with you, but also want to add that men and women lose weight differently too, so that's just one more reason they should go by other standards instead of the scale. I hope they are able to realize how much the emphasis on the numbers is a negative message to send viewers.

That's just American society for you! Geez, ever been in Weight Watchers? It's all about the precious scale. You can lose inches and gain muscle but WW doesn't care one bit, they want to see you lose pounds.

BMI! That's a great idea. You are very knowledgeable about weight loss factors and make excellent observations. The problem with some of these factors is the inability to make objective measurements and tone would be one of those values that would be subjective. A DANCE SCORE, for instance, is a subjective measurement and may be effected by outside factors (*cough* medical stories *cough*). Not to give up though, viewers' ideas can help improve fairness and objectivity for the next season.

BMI . . . great idea. 2 lbs a week it a healthy weight loss. Anymore than that is actually not healthy. It was sad to see Pinky and Brandon lose a pound or two and be disappointed instead of happy for their accomplishments.

I feel for Pinky when she works hard and "only" loses 2 lbs. because I know she's building muscle and most of us would be thrilled to lose 2 lbs.
