Full Version: sinful grotesque excess - hello, we're in a recession
Oxygen Boards > TV Shows > Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood
amandar
I just watched this show for the first time. It was the episode about baby Stella's first birthday party. While there is nothing wrong with being wealthy, there is something terribly wrong with absolutely thoughtless excess and waste. Did Ms. Spelling think for a moment how many people had labored on the giant ladybug cake she let her daughter walk in? Did she think for a moment how many people it could feed? How much did it cost? How much food did she throw away? It was only one of many absolutely disgusting displays of thoughtless selfishness on her and husband's parts. They should both be ashamed and think for at least a few moments about those of their neighbors who have lost jobs and homes in this terrible recession - or maybe the one in five people on the planet who go to bed hungry every night.
Those of us blessed with enough have every right to enjoy it, but not to waste it so egregiously. This should not be entertainment. Shame on Ms. Spelling. Shame on Mr. McDermott. Shame on Oxygen.

WE are in a recession, but NBC and the Spelling/McDermott family (and thousands of other celebs) aren't.

I agree that they are in a position to help less fortunate people and maybe that could be her focus for next season. Oxy, take note!!!

Tori is the money maker with her jewelry line-Dean doesn't do jack. He's a horrible actor-he's living off Tori.
Jcurran23
they work for their money and can spend it anyway they want. I let my kids stick their hands in their first birthday cakes, that must mean I'm a terrible person. Yeah we're in a recession, bad things happen sometimes, but the people not affected shouldn't have to give up their lifestyles they worked to attain because some peolpe have it rough. Do you balance Tori's checkbook? How do you know that she didn't write a big fat check to a charity somewhere? Find something better to do than nitpick at ever minute detail of these peolpe's lives.
TreatsR4All
The person that posted about the recession and the babies birthday party being a gross expenditure: Get a life! Just because a person may be wealthy does not automatically mean they have to spend all of their earnings on charity. Why do you care if someone spends a lot of money on their child's birthday party? I think it's perfectly fine that Tori and Dean had a lavious birthday party for Stella. I am not wealthy by any means as I definitely live paycheck to paycheck, however I have some extremely wealthy friends among some poor ones. I would never take offense like you did that a wealthy person had a lavious party. It's their money. They earned it. They work hard. They can spend it the way they wish to spend it. If you ever even buy a stick of gum that you don't "need", then you are also spending needlessly which you shouldn't be - in a recession. Give us a break!
TreatsR4All
Another thing.. Cakes like the large ladybug cake at Stella's birthday party are madto be dug into. There's NOTHING wrong with letting Stella go at the cake full force. I've made several cakes just like the one at the party and I wanted people to dig into them. In fact, it makes me proud to see people enjoying the cake even though it took several hours of hard work to complete. It's all worth it when the people love the cake enough to get messy with it.
Jcurran23
Treats4All, I completely agree with you! Besides I'm betting a giant ladybug cake isn't going to eliminate world hunger!

I know you think you are right in feeling this way, but have you thought about how many people were "put to work" for Stella's 1st Birthday. I'm sure that cake wasn't cheap and all of the people who worked on it had a job that day, not to mention free advertising for their bakery, all of the other suppliers, the musical and dancing groups had a gig for the day and as free-lance artists in these tough times - that's big and also free advertising for their skills, all the rental chairs and tables. Do you really think that Tori and Dean are so excessive and wasteful now? I'll bet you hadn't thought of those things at all.

Tori has set up a charity for sick and injured animals in memory of her dog who died during the first season of Home Sweet Hollywood - Mimi LaRue. Dean has called attention to motorcycle racing and has demonstrated not only the bikes he's purchased but the clothing he has worn on the show - wetting the appetites of viewers. Here is a link to Tori's charity work: http://www.looktothestars.org/celebrity/690-tori-spelling

You know, Amadar, can all sit here and feel sorry for ourselves and inferior to the rich. Tori and Dean actually do try to help by using their time and energy to point out things we can all do to help others. I don't have the money, but I sure have time. Do you do anything for those less fortunate? Tori and Dean are very good examples of how to be good parents. Did you hear Stella - on her 1st birthday - say "flower"? Liam is amazing too. He obviously understands a lot more than the average 2 year old (he turned 2 in March 2009). They are surrounded with cultural diversity. How does that compare with your life. How many friends do you have who had skin a different color?

Why does that bother you. If you are a man, does your wife work? If you are a women, do you work? Why does it have to fit societies formula of "normal" anyway. Besides, Dean has done 2 movies in the past year. He is a hands-on dad, which is also abnormal to your way of thinking, huh?

Are you just jealous?

Thank you Jcurran23! I too doubt that a giant ladybug cake would elminiate world hunger. Did the person who posted that also call PETA to complain? They did have caged bugs.. really, REALLY? Geez!

Also, I also agree completely with the other post that the thoughts never crossed that person's mind that many people actually HAD A JOB to do for the party where they got paid in money! Events like that do not just "poof and happen". There are a lot of logistics that need to be arranged and a lot of vendors/people that need to do something to make it happen.

I been watching Tori and Dean, and It brings me to tears with the whole mother thing! She will sooner or later regret missing out on these, most precious times with her grandchildren! Ihope they have a third, even though it is a lot of work! Hi Brooklynmama, long time no "see"!

i can understand your perspective, but really you need to lighten up! This is just a t.v. show. I'm a big fan of Tori & Dean & family, I don't see what you're so upset about. I'm pretty sure that wealthy people like Tori & Dean donate much money every year to worthy causes. We get the chance to look at a Tinsle Town family up close, it's not meant to enrage, it's meant to include! If you don't like what it stands for, then don't watch! And definitely don't write here! Take your negativity somewhere else bored mama, you don't get it! blink.gif

Dean is living off Tori ?

Tori does so many charity events and seems to have a sweet heart. Her goal when she plans a party seems to be to provide a nice time for everyone invited and her family.

The only thing I saw that was a little unfortunate was Liam seems to be freaking out at the parties for whatever reason and Stella seemed cranky/uncomfortable at her huge party. Babies are unpredictable so maybe Oxy edited to show those cranky moments vs the fun moments they ended up having. Tori's friends are really there for her and attend every event whether it be a b-day party or charity event.

Dean's request to Tori on the finale was to tone down the parties, agreed she does go ALL OUT, maybe because that's what she had growing up.

I think you make a good point Amandar. It does come off as somewhat wasteful and thoughtless ,especially at this time with the economy.
But for me , it's the little things like that that make the show interesting . The lifestyle of folks who have only known vast wealth . Otherwise it would be just like watching big brother or something
Sort of eye popping

Agreed. She does a lot of charity work. I think there's nothing wrong with having big parties. Who to say if we had that kind of money we wouldn't go all out for our children.

I have to agree with you concerning Dean's acting abilities ......

I really doubt that the whole cake got thrown out! It was plenty large enough for Stella's friends and family to eat around her mess. Beside's, they are all friends and family! Like they care whether the child stuck her hands in it!

I am sorry , but I can't comprehend offering the remainder of a cake to any guest in my home thay my child just rolled in it ...................

Are you serious ?

Their money, they can spend it the way they want.
It was Stella's first birthday. I let my kid destroy the first birthday cake & I had another for guest. I seriously doubt that was the only cake Tori had.

If I had the money Tori has I'd have parties

of that size for everyone I love. I grew up

middle class. To be able to throw a party

where money isn't an object would be incredibly

fun. In today's economy, the more money spent

the better for the economy.

Just a thought but maybe they put another cake aside for the guests. It's tradition to make a mess for baby's 1st b-day, LOL. My Godson didn't want anything to do w/the whole messy cake thing, LOL. His Mom was trying to get him to stick his little hands in the cake but he just cried, sad.gif . My daughters loved it, dug right in and made a huge mess, classic! laugh.gif

As far as the expense of the whole extravaganza, I think celebs do things way out because they can. Who knows if I had the kind of money T&D have I might have done bigger parties too.

There is something to be said for simplicity and celebrating w/cherished friends/family versus all of Hollywood. Maybe T's Mom would have shown up if the party was more low key.

So...go ahead and serve your guests the cake your kid rolled in

ok First off, the people who 'labored' over the cake WERE PAID, probably quite well for it. Secondly, as for letting her walk in it? I can totally understand the purpose for that, I just got done reading STORI telling, and Tori mentions how for birthdays and holidays she was given fancy dolls that she was never allowed to play with, she would open the doll and it had to be given back to her mom to get put in a glass case.. kinda fits the situation of letting her daughter walk in the cake, kids want to smash cake at their first birthday, they stick their hands in it and get messy and have a complete hands on interraction, tori obviously wasnt allowed that with certain things, and wants to give her daughter that experience. BIG DEAL. Just because Tori is a celeberity and is filmed doing this stuff, does nt make her responsible for the people who do not have what she has. How much food do you throw away? do you ALWAYS finish everything on your plate? have your children never wasted food? How is people who go to bed hungry, any more tori's responsibility than it is yours? oh thats right, you think shes rich beyond her means. shes not , she works and makes money yes, but im sure she has a mortgage, and bills and college educations to save for and children to raise.. i forgot she is just sitting on piles upon piles of money. YOU my dear need to wake up!

Great post! smile.gif I agree. Did any of these people complaining see the episode where Tori said they give alot of the kids toys cuz they get alot from friends and fans, to other children less fortunate! I saw it. If you all think toris life is extravagant you would probably pass out if you saw what other celebs do for there kids. the only difference is Tori and Deans are being shown, the others are not.
AngelBoots
Of course Tori had another cake!!! It's tradition! I would of done it exactly the same if i was her and not care who say's what. Do you eat all of your take out food? What was she surpost to wrap up some cake and send it to hungry people. Where I live it is illegal to give homeless people food (crazy but true) So what is she surpose to do get a dinky cake and the world will be less hungry. Always someone to bitch!. That was a MEMORY she wanted to create. And she did. Hey stella here you are with this one inch cake or Here stella, here you are with your monster cake! Which one would be more memorable? Plus cake Is flour and water..... Ohhh. Why do some people just don't get it??? There needs to be a school for "getting it" Common sense obviously can't be taught.
And Tori and Dean are married, which means her money is his money and his is hers they combine there money to have a family! If you are married do you have seperate bank accounts? Gesh, If I ever become famous I would be on these boards everyday "smashing haters".
AngelBoots
And how is that sinful? It is a sin to make a cake larger or to have a child walk in it, or on it? Where in the Bible does it say that?? You need a lesson on sins my dear because clearly someone has brain washed your mind into what is sinful and what isn't and If you think that having a birthday party is a sin, This whole world is "going to hell" in your book probably including yourself.

I'm curious in your mind at what dollar do you stop at for a childs first birthday party for it not to be a sin? $50, $100. If it was a $100 and you spent $101 would you be going to hell? LMAO, give me a break. In reality you are a commie you want everyone to have equal amount of money, no matter what they do for work.

I guess you think P. Diddy is really a sinner and going to hell huh???

Since you have such strong feelings about Tori's "sinful grotesque excess" because
"hello, we're in a recession" maybe you should write our government and complain about how much they waste our tax dollars. The last time I checked Tori isn't on welfare or food stamps, so you didn't help pay for the cake or party.
I am sure everyone that had any part of preparing for Stellas party got paid.
If Tori had a cake made the size of her house for her daughter it is her business, its her money. wink.gif
